Found My First VHF

Ok. So. Sometime before 2015; or at least three or four years before then, I was in Sarasota and found an Icom submersible VHF on the beach.

I was walking the beach very early in the morning. There had been a vicious storm the night before. I turned it on – it was on the weather channel and working fine despite probably spending the evening floating to shore after someone who was monitoring the storm dropped it overboard. I could not believe my eyes – or ears! What a find!!!

Never Have Charged It In Over 10 Years

Well, I’ve been using my IC-M72 VHF since then and have never charged it! I carry it with me daily, use it to answer calls from the cockpit, then switch it back off. I started thinking; I don’t have a way to charge it. A new charger turned out to be about $85. A new radio runs a bit over $100. Hmmmm.

eBay Was My Best Option

Well, I found a “new in box” same radio WITH CHARGER for a final bid of $52. Cost me about $10 more for shipping. Wow. A backup vhf AND the charger for less than the charger. “NIB” – “new in box!”

So, my question is, once I start charging the old radio – will the battery “get a memory?

If I DO have to buy a “new” handheld VHF radio, I think I’ll opt for the ICOM M94D VHF Marine Radio with DSC & AIS! If it doesn’t come with a charger – no worries!
