Changing Your Sailboat Engine’s Oil and Transmission Oil

  1. Gather supplies – oil, oil filter, pump, empty jug, rags, funnel, funnel with hose as needed 
  2. Heat up the engine and make a cup of tea
  3. Walk the dock, look at boats, talk to neighbors
  4. Put today’s date on new filter, engine hours
  5. Remove oil cap on top of engine
  6. Remove dipstick
  7. Feed extraction line into dipstick opening
  8. Make sure oil will go into empty jug from extraction hose – use tough tape, clothes pins, whatever to secure
  9. Pump out oil, move exit line deeper and shallower
  10. Remove old oil filter, place 
  11. Run your finger around the filter seat – check for grit/anything undesired
  12. Make sure threaded extrusion is firmly seated in engine
  13. Lubricate new filter o-ring
  14. Install new oil filter
  15. Fill top fill with oil
  16. Check oil level, add more oil if needed
  17. Recheck oil level, check for leaks
  18. Start engine, look for leaks, listen for oil alarm to stop
  19. What a great feeling of independence – you changed your oil!!!
  20. How often? 150-200 hours is average; check your own engine manual
  21. What oil? Check your engine manual

Transmission Oil Change

  1. Locate small yellow dipstick toward back of engine
  2. Remove dipstick
  3. Dipstick has a small o-ring; don’t lose that
  4. Feed extraction hose into opening
  5. Withdraw the oil – about a cup – about 8.5 ounces
  6. Use funnel, funnel with hose 
  7. Replace oil
  8. Check with dipstick
  9. Careful to not cross thread dipstick when replace it, check for o-ring
  10.  How often? When you change your engine oil.
  11. What oil? Check your engine manual.
