Cleaning Your Sailboat Engine’s Raw Water Sea Strainer
Step-by-Step instructions for cleaning out your sailboat engine’s raw water sea strainer.
- Shut off the sea water – turn off the seacock / close the through-hull fitting
- Some will have flushing attachment for winterizing the engine – remove first
- Large wing nut, or several wing nuts, or tabs to use to remove the top lid
- Inside is a basket – pull out basket – watch for gasket / o-ring
- Empty and clean the basket – don’t drop it overboard
- Replace strainer basket
- Make sure it’s seated
- Replace lid
- Replace securing mechanisms
- Replace flushing attachment if one is present
- Open seacock – through-hull fitting
- Look for leaks
- Run engine to test for leaks
- *Option – leave lid a bit loose, open through-hull to fill/burp, close, tighten lid, proceed
- Wipe up salt water – do you know why?
- How often? When engine fails to pump water, struggles, you see grass/silt
