Sailors New Year Resolutions 2023
Happy New Sailing Year! Let’s make some sailing resolutions for 2023. Here are some suggestions. Feel free to comment below on some you would like to see boaters follow.
- Wear your inflatable pfd. If anyone goes overboard; they put everyone else’s safety at risk.
- Wear the leg straps. They are what keep the pfd from smothering you while you try to keep it under your neck and off your face.
- Register for and program an MMSI into your VHF radio so that the little red distress button works.
- Buy an EPIRB or a PLB and register it.
- Put together a ditch kit containing safety, signaling and survival equipment in case you get stranded or have to abandon ship. (See Tuesday’s article for ideas on what to include!)
- Include a picture of your boat with your float plans. Heck, start registering your float plan!
- Locate all the through hull fittings on your boat. Put a kit including soft wood plugs somewhere accessible so that you can stop the flooding if one of those fittings fails
- Install a bilge alarm. Install a second bilge pump. Install a high water alarm. Install a low water alarm.
- Assign lookout duties to everyone.
- Determine before departing the dock who is second in command so they can take over in case of an emergency.
- Don’t skip the safety and emergency brief. Tell everyone where are the pfd’s, flares, type IV throwable, sound producing device, fire extinguishers, how to disable the autopilot, how to activate the MOB button…
- Watch the weather. Use all the phone apps.
