You’re jonesing to go diving. I can relate to your impatience. After five months of going nowhere except a no-contact trip to the grocery every eight weeks to have food dumped into the bed of my truck, and four weeks back to work in person; I’m ready to start planning our first Post-Covid scuba diving trip just like you probably are. It might not happen for over a year, but usually we plan about six major trips a year. The place I’m yearning to spend some time in the most gorgeous spot; Roatan, Honduras, specifically, Wikkid Resort!

Wikkid Resort is a boutique dive resort with very limited capacity; the absolute maximum number of visitors is capped at 18. With six rooms accommodating a couple in each; you are more likely to be on site with a total of 12 visitors.

Best Diving of My Life

Seriously, although we were so careful to not over-hype ourselves with the excitement of our first scuba diving trip to Roatan, our expectations were high. Really really high. My research and in-depth comparisons took me down to two choices on Roatan. My criteria are high and deep. Wikkid won.

We scheduled our last dive of 2019 in Belize, with our favorite Sea Sports Belize. You can read about how we closed out our diving year at: Diving Belize City Belize // Dive Cruise // Sea Sports Belize. Purposely, the first dive of the New Year was set for Roatan, Honduras – our Holy Grail of Diving!

Those Walls at Mary’s Place

We had reserved a 45′ catamaran for a private dive for the six in our group. Private yacht, Roatan, Mary’s Place… how can you not over sell yourselves on something special like that.

Unbelievably, the actual experience blew away our expectations, and that’s why I can’t wait to return for some more scuba diving at Wikkid Resort.

Wikkid Resort

Wikkid Resort is in Dixon Cover in the Bay Islands of Honduras, in Roatan. They are easily accessible from the cruise ship terminal, or a five-minute drive from the airport and island’s south side ferry terminal.

They are a full-service PADI “Five Star” dive center. Not only are certifications offered, but also continuing education for scuba divers. Also, they have two 50-foot Voyage catamarans that are modified for diving activities.

Ten Minute Ride

Our dive group of six arrived by cruise ship. Once we navigated through the terminal to the taxi stand, we were quickly led to a Wikkid transport van for the trip across part of the island.

The ride was not long, but great to give us a sense of what the island is like and get away from the busy cruise ship dock area. We love the chance to get a feel for an island by driving across, and this ticked all the boxes for us.

Accommodations

Although our visit to Wikkid Resort was only for a day, we were made to feel completely welcome. Tours of the resort including most living and cooking spaces were included.

Wikkid Resort has garden view and ocean view rooms, as well as a bungalow and a penthouse.

We toured one of the garden view rooms. Yes, there’s even a flashlight on the bedside table! We noticed plenty of attention to detail like that around the resort.

Garden View Rooms

The accommodations were spacious, cool, and uncluttered. There are two resort rooms with garden view.

They feature king-sized beds, tile floors, safe, fan, television, air conditioning, shower and separate toilet, hair dryer and 110v/220v electric sockets as well as… private patios!

Two adults and an optional single child are the maximum occupancy for the Garden View Rooms at Wikkid Resort.

Ocean View Rooms

Same as Garden View room, except with a view of the ocean and a hammock for enjoying ocean breezes.

Two adults and an optional single child are the maximum occupancies for the Ocean View Rooms.

All rooms get to enjoy the hummingbird Grand Central; while you see four hummingbirds in this photo; there are dozens buzzing around waiting to swoop in for room at the next open flower. This is the place that you could wear one of those hummingbird feeder rings and have an instant friend!

Diving From A Catamaran

I work as a sailboat captain on this size catamaran, so I’m very familiar with the benefits of diving from a sailing vessel like this.

They are more stable, and you can get out of the sun. There are “bathrooms” called heads, and a kitchen called a “galley,” and even “bedrooms” called cabins for changing clothes.

It’s easy to get back on board from either hull with the ladders, and easy to get into the water with a Big Stride right off the back. Wikkid Resort has modified their catamarans to safely hold tanks and dive gear at the stern.

Post-dive, there’s showers on each hull at the stern, and an enormous cockpit table where we enjoyed some snacks and soda or other beverages.

Ten Minute Boat Ride to Mary’s Place

And the famous Mary’s Place? A ten-minute boat ride from Wikkid Resort!

While you need at least four divers to take out the catamaran; the advantages are enormous. They even offer some full-day trips complete with hot meals, and multi-day trips are coming soon.

Cruise Ship Package

Wikkid Resort even offers packages to divers coming off the cruise ships, like we were. It’s a two minute ride from Mahogany Bay where Carnival docks, and ten minutes from Coxen Hole where Royal Caribbean and others dock.

The packages include transportation both ways, two tanks of diving, snacks, water, gear, Roatan Marine Park park fees, and taxes. In exchange, we felt like millionaires with our own private yacht as overcrowded dive boats maneuvered around us.

Rum Time!

On the return trip to Wikkid Resort; it was open bar time! Locally-sourced beers for everyone to sample, as well as an assortment of rums and other liquors as well as sodas and water.

Backup Plan for Divers

I’m always scoping out our backup plan if the wind precludes diving. Wikkid Resort already has the plan – although their south side is full of incredible dive sites and smaller crowds, and even a dive right off the resort; they partner with Roatan Divers.

On the West End of Sandy Bay, Roatan Divers is the backup plan. They have locations in West End and Sandy Bay. So, if the weather turns bad in one area; you have other sides of the island to explore underwater.

For the next consideration, my husband Bill wants me to compare an all-inclusive like Anthony’s Key to a self-designed trip to Wikkid Resort. I plan to fully research that, as well as all-inclusives in other locations. I have heard that an all-inclusive that offers diving can be a great option, so I want to line up the numbers and see what’s the best value for our time and money. So, that’s coming soon!
