Ft. Pierce Florida // Fun Weekend on the Town
Ft. Pierce is one fun town! From the adorable downtown area to the Saturday market, there’s a lot to see and do. A friend and I had the good fortune to head down there for a weekend sailing race. We thoroughly enjoyed poking around the area and plan to return sometime soon!

The Downtown Farmers’ Market of Fort Pierce, Inc.
From 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, the Downtown Farmers’ Market is a great destination. There’s everything from artwork and hats and clothing to jewelry and soaps to fruits and vegetables, and even ready-to-eat food.

Great Fruits and Veg
We had our pick of a great selection of fruits and vegetables. Stocking up on fresh local produce was a treat.

This shopper was showing off her, well, I’m not sure what these fuzzy fruits are!

We all had a good laugh, then realized it was great to see so much variety and produce we don’t normally see at our own local markets.

Hardest to resist were the flower vendors and their gorgeous wares.
Overflowing with flowers of all types; nearly everyone who walked by this booth smiled.

Since we were there for only the weekend, we didn’t dare indulge. Next time, I will!

Another item very difficult to resist on our short weekend was the plants. I have an obsession with orchids and succulents. The examples they featured were so incredibly healthy and colorful!

However, we had no problem agreeing to sample and take with us plenty of freshly-baked goods.

Get there early – the favorites go fast!

Cuban Coffee!
Of course, what goes best with freshly-baked pastries? Cuban coffee, of course! Bam!

Gourmet dog biscuits sold right next to the Cuban coffee. Impulse item?

We treated ourselves to coconut cake from Gina’s Bake Shop. It was dense and rich and absolutely lovely!

One vendor had “3-D” art that required special glasses to view.

Are you seeing what I’m seeing?

Hat Opportunity!
In addition to dog collars and bowls, jewelry, and decorated license plates and mugs, the hat vendors were excellent!

I chose a smart straw hat with a ribbon drawstring. The best part is it has no back, so a ponytail fits, and you can sit and read without the brim getting stuck on your chair.

Bright clothing of all types; here there were blousy pants that looked almost like skirts. Tropical colors abounded

There’s plenty of room to sit by the water and enjoy the breezes at the Ft. Pierce Farmers’ Market.

Live music is often playing, so it’s a great spot to people watch and meet up with friends.

The Ft. Pierce Farmers’ Market grounds is full of fully-grown palms that provide a bit of shade and breezy feeling.

Shopping Downtown
With a goal of checking the local thrift and consignment shops, we walked the downtown area in search of fun places to browse.

We found a cute shop with a mixture of antiques and modern items. Some pieces were consignment, some were sold by the shop owners.

Tropical-themed books seemed to be in great demand.

We picked up a few necklaces, photo album, and cosmetics bag.

African Art, Antiques, and Gifts
If you want to be treated to a huge selection of African clothing, sculptures, carvings, and even jewelry, this is the place.

I’m a big fan of the African shea butter, so this display smelled great to me!

You could spend hours in this shop browsing everything from antiques to new items.

Of course, the gourds intrigued me!

Impressive Historical Buildings
We toured a few of the buildings that were open in downtown. Many had plaques and photos of their history.

Fascinating glimpses of times gone by.

The downtown area still has some historic wooden buildings.

Architecture was a delight to view in Ft. Pierce.

These are blocks cut from coral. Luckily, you can’t do that anymore.

The cutest U. S. Coast Guard outpost ever!

Zagster E-Scooter Share Program
We started spotting the scooters as we wound around through town.

Of course, we had to stop and see what it was all about!

Scooters were arranged in groups, ready to check out.

There was a QR code to scan in order to process a rental payment for the scooters.

Wandering Around Town
Orange Avenue – perfect for Florida!

The typical Florida bungalows intrigued me; their front yards often were mostly driveway and river rock. I especially like the large sun shutters.

More sun shutters – they look like the Bahama shutters on my shed at home.

This could the funniest of my photos from the weekend. Apparently this is a real “thing” – a gang of peacocks that has lived in this one area for decades.

Pre-Race Familiarization Time!
We were hosted by the Commodore of the Ft. Pierce Yacht Club for a Woman’s Race on her Freedom yacht “Deja Vu.”

Our all-girl crew looking fierce, locating all the lines on the boat.

Rather glad I invested in a decent hat.

Starboard side of our ride. Isn’t she pretty!

Sails ready, tomorrow’s the big day!

Race Day, Heading Out the Inlet
Although flat calm inland, offshore was a bit bumpier.

We had a chance to see Ft. Pierce from the water.

Crew shirts for Deja Vu in hot pink!

Plotting the course and race strategy.

Captain Diane heading to the starting line.

They only look ahead of us – our handicap meant we beat most of them!

Foredeck crew had a lovely view.

The captain took a rest, and I brought her back in post-race.

It’s so interesting to see where the plotter says you are – and there are some shallow spots between Deja Vu’s home berth and the sea bouy!

Race Awards at the Yacht Club
We were so fortunate to be invited to the post-race lobster dinner!

Captain Diane and Captain Mitch donning full lobster-eating regalia.

Yacht Club all decorated – that’s our dive master Mitchell; Elise and I gave a talk about visiting Cuba.

Unbelieveable dinner!

Elise with Cuba souvenir and that huge lobster dinner.

Mitch versus bug. Mitch for the win!

Awards dinner cake – the perfect finish to the evening.

Our second place stemless wineglass trophy. Every participant on a winning boat received a trophy instead of only the captain. How wonderful – and a special reminder of a fantastic weekend and lots of new friends
