Back 40 Urban Cafe // Great Food With a Social Consciousness // St. Augustine Florida

Our eternal quest for “off the chain” restaurants led us to Back 40 Urban Cafe in St. Augustine, Florida. Everyone we spoke to gave them glowing reviews – “the tacos!” – “the sandwiches!” – so we were eager to sample the menu, a mixture of Caribbean, vegetarian, and Tex-Mex. The results? We keep going back to Back 40 Urban Cafe every time we’re in St. Augustine!

First Impressions

Located on a back street in St. Augustine near some commercial ventures, Back 40 Urban Cafe is in a cute little historic-looking home. Their south parking lot looks like it hold four or five cars.

It turns out, the house is larger than it seems from the front, and there’s additional outside seating in the back. Also, there’s a north parking lot that is much larger. Even so, it always fees like you have the place to yourself with the divided dining areas.

So Many Decisions

The Back 40 Urban Cafe menu even has a secret section! I won’t spoil it for you. Over the last couple years, we’ve sampled almost everything on the menu. We haven’t had a single mediocre selection yet.

Do You Like Tacos

Well, if you do – you are in luck! They’re phenomenal. There’s not much more I can say; all ingredients are fresh, the combinations are unique, and the serving sizes are generous. Check their website for Happy Hour specials on tacos and beer.

Taco selections are Buffalo Chicken, Avocado and Roasted Red Pepper, Jerk Chicken, Steak, Chimichurri Pork, Mojo Pork, Shrimp, Mahi, and Dynamite Shrimp. I can’t really say which is my favorite. However, I’ve been known to order two or three to eat in-house, and a couple for take home for lunch the next day.

Social Consciousness

One of the features we really like about Back 40 Urban Cafe is their Social Consciousness emphasis.

If you show up for takeouts and forget your bag, you can buy one of theirs for $2 and take 10% off your to go order. So, really, if you ordered $20 of food, the bag is free – they’re practically paying you to do the right thing and go with reusables.

Their commitment to eliminate styrofoam and plastics resulted in a mixture of compostable, natural, reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable to-go supplies.
